Penn Hills Sweeps Woodlands, Both Teams Take Over First Place

As they say over in Penn Hills, “It’s A Great Day To Be An Indian”. Tuesday night was a great night to be an Indian as the Penn Hills boys and girls basketball teams swept section rival, Woodland Hills, to take over first place in its respective sections.

The girls team won 68-41, followed by the boys 79-57 triumph.

For the girls, Woodland Hills held a 14-10 lead after the first quarter, but it was all Penn Hills from there. The Indians outscored the Wolverines 22-13 in the second quarter to take a 32-27 halftime lead. The Indians outscored them 36-15 in the second half.

Leading the way was senior Tayonna Robertson with 20 points. Senior Adia Brisker finished with 15 points. Woodland Hills was led by freshman Jazmine Dunn with 10 points.

With the win, the Penn Hills girls team improves to 11-3 overall and 7-0 in the section. They will look for their seventh straight win on Thursday in a section game at Penn-Trafford. Woodland Hills falls to 6-7 overall and 5-2 in the section. The Wolverines will host Oakland Catholic in a section game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The beginning of the boys game was eerily similar to the girls. Woodland Hills was able to hang in for a quarter, but it was all Penn Hills after that.

Trailing 16-15 after one, the Indians outscored the Wolverines 27-9 in the second quarter, highlighted by a 16-0 run that opened the game up.

The Wolverines struggled from the field, converting on 21 of 60 (35 percent) of their shots. Penn Hills was 31 of 59 (52 percent) and 16 of 21 from the free-throw line.

Sophomore Wes Kropp led Penn Hills with 22 points. Tyree Spencer and Kryee Hairston-Mitchell each poured in 18 points.

The WPIAL’s leading scorer, Woodland Hills’ Keandre Bowles finished with a game-high 34 points.

With the win, the Penn Hills boys team improves to 11-2 overall and 6-2 in the section. The Indians will go for their fifth straight win on Friday when they host Fox Chapel in a non-section game at 7:30 p.m. Woodland Hills drops to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the section. The Wolverines had their eight game winning streak snapped with the loss. They will look to start a new one on Friday in a section game at Gateway at 7:30 p.m.

Scoring Records Fall In Woodland Hills Win Against McKeesport

Heading into Tuesday night’s Section 1-5A showdown between Woodland Hills and McKeesport, both teams were still looking to stay undefeated in section play.

Both teams played their hearts out, but I don’t think anyone could predict what was about to unfold.

Junior Deamontae Diggs scored 42 points and recorded 20 rebounds to break the McKeesport single game scoring record.

For Woodland Hills, senior Keandre Bowles scored 43 points and brought in 13 rebounds, breaking the single game scoring record for the Wolverines, which was previously set at 39 points.

The Wolverines ended up coming away with the victory, 96-91.

Woodland Hills jumped out to an 18-2 lead in the first quarter, but McKeesport never felt out of it behind Diggs’ performance. Diggs rallied the Tigers back into it, eventually taking the lead early in the fourth quarter.

The Wolverines would responded, with Bowles scoring nine of his points in the fourth quarter. Senior Tre’Mon Josey also played big part in the victory, scoring 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter. Junior Raelon Robertson and senior Jay Smith also finished in double figures with 10 points a piece.

Joining Diggs in double figures for McKeesport was senior Christian Moore with 14 points and sophomore Brisan Kison with 11 points.

With the win, Woodland Hills remains in first place in the section with a 9-1 overall record and 5-0 section record. The Wolverines will go for their ninth straight win next Tuesday when they travel to Penn Hills for a section game at 7:30 p.m.

McKeesport drops to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in the section. The Tigers will host Penn Hills in a section game on Friday at 6 p.m.

Deja Vu in West Allegheny’s Quarterfinal Win Against Woodland Hills

Fourteen is the magic number West Allegheny football needs to get to against Woodland Hills in 2018. For the second time this season, the Indians defeated the Wolverines, 14-13, at North Allegheny’s Martorelli Stadium. On Friday night, it was to advance to the Class 5A WPIAL semifinals.

Both defenses stood tall with only three points scored in the first half. In the second quarter, senior Charles Hanchett connected on a 24-yard field goal to give Woodland Hills a 3-0 lead into the break.

West Allegheny recorded its first lead of the game in the third quarter on a 45-yard touchdown run by sophomore Nico Flati. Senior John McArdle’s extra point made it 7-3. Flati finished the game with 98 rushing yards.

The Wolverines bounced back with 10 unanswered points between the third and fourth quarters. Junior William Clark punched it in from a yard out to regain the lead for Woodland Hills. In the fourth quarter, Hanchett connected on his second field goal of the game, a 28-yard attempt, to put the Wolverines up 13-7.

It wasn’t enough to hold West Allegheny down. The Indians delivered the game-winning touchdown with just over a minute left in regulation on a 9-yard touchdown pass from junior Kam Kruze to senior Isaac Longstreth to tie the game. McArdle’s extra point gave the Indians the lead and West Allegheny held onto the win.

The win improves West Allegheny to 9-2 on the season. The Indians will face top-seed and defending Class 5A WPIAL champion, Gateway, next Friday at a site and time to be determined.

Alumni Update – Woodland Hills’ Mike Whiteherse

Bethany College’s Mike Whiteherse finished with a 37.7 yard average on six punts in Saturday night’s 22-13 win over Waynesburg University.

The freshman dropped 3 of 6 inside the Yellow Jackets’ 20-yard line and forced fair catches on 4 of 6.

Whiteherse was a tremendous help to the Bisons’ defensive effort, pushing Waynesburg’s average starting field position to their own 25-yard line following his six punts.
