Shaler clinches Playoff Spot With Win At Fox Chapel

Shaler (4-6, 3-4) clinched a playoff berth with a 27-20 win on the road at Fox Chapel on Friday Night.

Down 6-0 at the half, the Titans went to the ground and rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns. The ground game was led by Josh Miller with 112 yards. Freshman Luke Cignetti added a 21-yard run for a score.

Senior Jake Miller added two rushing Touchdowns. Joe Impavido caught a 22-yard for a touchdown as well.

Defense was led by Ryan Thibault with two sacks. Shaler will make the playoffs for consecutive seasons for the first time since 2008 and 2009 seasons.

Shaler Wins First WPIAL Baseball Title In 20 Years

It took 20 years, but Shaler finally got the one for the thumb, winning their fifth WPIAL baseball championship in program history with a 8-1 win against Laurel Highlands at Wild Things Park.

Five was the lucky number as the Titans won their fifth title as the No. 5 seed. The No. 6 Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but it was all Titans from that point on.

This was Shaler’s first year in Class 5A after competing in Class 6A last year.

Senior Colin Harger was 4 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Titans, who scored three runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.

Junior Nick Rispoli was dominant in relief for Shaler. Rispoli retired the first 11 Mustangs he faced and only allowed one walk in 4.1 innings to earn the win, striking out eight batters.

Shaler improves to 15-7 will face the fourth-place team out of District 3 in the PIAA playoffs Monday.

Alumni Update – Shaler’s AJ Nichols

Penn State-Behrend senior AJ Nichols appeared in three game last week, starting in game one against D’Youville and Mt. Aloysius.

In both starts, Nichols registered a win while pitching complete games. Nichols registered 21 strikeouts on the week, including a season-high 12 against Mt. Aloysius.

She pitched 14.2 innings, giving up just 10 hits and three runs while finishing the week with an ERA of 0.95.

The Shaler graduate was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Pitcher of the Week for her performance.

Alumni Update – Shaler’s Lauren Miller

Lauren Miller hit .571 (12 for 21) over six starts last week for 6-0 Saint Vincent College.

She totaled 10 RBI, four runs scored and four doubles. Miller finished the week with a .522 on-base percentage.

Her .473 batting average leads the Presidents’ Athletic Conference this season while her .523 on-base percentage and 22 RBI rank second.

The Shaler graduate was named PAC Hitter of the Week for her performance.

Alumni Update – Shaler’s AJ Nichols

Penn State Behrend senior AJ Nichols was named the AMCC Softball Player of the Week.

The Shaler graduate finished the week with a .379 batting average and eight RBIs. She had 11 hits including five doubles and one triple. Nichols had an on-base percentage of .438 for the week, as well as a .621 slugging percentage.

Against Emerson, she had three hits in five at-bats including three RBIs with a .600 batting average. In addition to her work at the plate, Nichols picked up two wins in the circle for the Lions.
