Hardy Lifts Penn Hills to First State Championship in 23 Years

Daequan Hardy was no slouch during the regular season. The senior was a first-team defensive back in the Northern Conference.

On Friday night, Hardy showed why he earned that status, putting in one of the greatest performances in the state championship game, that will be talked about for a long time.

Hardy had three interceptions, including a 100-yard pick-six, a kickoff return for a touchdown, and two more touchdowns on offense to lead Penn Hills to a 36-31 win against District 3 champion, Manheim Central, at Hersheypark Stadium in the Class 5A championship.

Manheim Central jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but the Indians responded quickly. Senior quarterback Hollis Mathis found his classmate Corey Thomas  for a 6-yard strike to cut the deficit to 7-6 after a failed two point conversion. Both Mathis and Thomas were named to the first-team all-section, Thomas as a defensive back.

The Indians took their first lead of the game on Hardy’s first touchdown of the game, a 74-yard pass from Mathis.

With 14 seconds left in the half and Manheim Central driving, Hardy flipped the game around with his 10-yard interception return for a touchdown to give Penn Hills a 18-7 lead at the half.

It as more of the same in the third quarter with Mathis and Hardy connecting for their second touchdown of the game, a 27-yard scoring play for a 24-7 lead.

Senior Terry “Tank” Smith joined in on the fun with a 35-yard run for a 30-7 lead.

Manheim Central scored its second touchdown of the game to make it 30-14, but Hardy made sure that momentum would be short-lived. Hardy returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a score. Manheim Central scored the next three times but it was too little too late as Penn Hills hung on for the win.

Penn Hills advances to Class 5A State Championship; Knocks Off Two-Time Defending Champ

For the first time in three years, there will be a new Class 5A PIAA football champion. That was made evident on Friday night at Chambersburg High School when WPIAL champion Penn Hills, defeated District 12 Champion, Arbishop Wood, 20-13 in the semifinals.

The win improved the Indians to 15-0, tying a school record that was set in 1995, the last time they advanced and won a state championship.

Known for their offense all season long, it was the defense that led Penn Hills over Archbishop Wood. The Indians held them to two first half field goals, and had the splash play of the first half in the first quarter.

Senior first-team Northern Conference running back Terry “Tank” Smith took the handoff and rushed 75-yards for the score. The Indians converted on the two point conversion with a pass from senior Hollis Mathis to senior Daequan Hardy.

With an 8-6 lead, Penn Hills opened the game up in the third quarter with another long touchdown run. This time, Hardy found paydirt from 62 yards out. The conversion failed, giving the Indians a 14-6 lead.

With a trip to the championship game on the line, the Indians pulled a trick out of their bag in the fourth quarter. Senior wide receiver Dante Cephas threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to senior Ric Martin for a 20-6 lead.

Archbishop Wood tacked on a touchdown but Penn Hills was able to hold on for the win and trip to Hershey.

For the second week in a row, Penn Hills had to mount a double-digit comeback. The Indians began that comeback before half on a 56-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Hollis Mathis to senior wide receiver Dante Cephas. The two-point conversion was no good, and Penn Hills trailed 10-6 at the half.

The momentum continued to swing in favor of Penn Hills in the third quarter. The Indians took their first lead of the game on a 15-yard run by senior Terry “Tank” Smith. Senior Daequan Hardy ran in the two-point conversion to give Penn Hills a 14-10 lead.

As the clock turned to the fourth quarter, Cephas and Mathis continued to hook up on their splash plays. Two duo connected on their second touchdown on 50-plus yards, a 65-yard strike to increase the lead. The two-point conversion gave Penn Hills a 22-10 lead.

Penn Hills tacked on another insurance touchdown on Mathis’ third passing score of the game, a 13-yard pass to senior Richard Martin. The two-point conversion failed, making it 28-10.

West Allegheny cut the deficit to 10 on a 54-yard pass from Kruze to senior Mateo Vandamia, plus the two-point conversion, but it was too little too late.
