American Legion Day 3 Recap
Northeastern 5, Belle Vernon 3
Northeastern claimed a 5-3 victory after fending off a late Belle Vernon charge in game nine to stay alive. After both teams picked up a run in the first inning, the Bobcats generated a 4-1 lead after the third inning that was sparked by a Derek Gross RBI-double. Belle Vernon threatened in the sixth adding two runs to stay in contention thanks in part to an error at third base. 16-year old Ryan Wilson shined bright for Northeastern going 2-for-3 with three RBI on a double and a single, critically adding the fifth run for Northeastern in the seventh. Quinn Shindler picked up the win after tossing 7 strikeouts in 6.1 frames. Connor Rippo earned the save after closing out the final 0.2 innings.
Bristol 3, Hughesville 1
Bristol opened up a 3-1 lead over Hughesville before a lengthy inclement weather delay halted play in the bottom of the sixth inning. Thomas Selsavage pitched consistently for Bristol, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning. Bristol’s runs came courtesy of an Aqual Chapman run in the fourth that was plated after a pair of errors and back-to-back RBI-singles in the fifth inning by Chapman and Dyland Held. Selsavage wound up facing all but two batters, fanning seven through 6.2 innings.
Quakertown 10, Wesleyville 5
The defending state champs Quakertown continued their pattern of big innings in the tournament, plating 6-0 runs in the top of the first inning against Wesleyville. Danny Qualteria who walked to start the inning, finished it off with a 2-run single. The Blue Jays went ahead 7-0 before Wesleyville score three runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull within 4 runs, but that was the closest they would come in the game. Cole Reich had three hits for the Blue Jays, while Qualteria, winning pitcher Cooper Natisin and Peyton Myers each drove in two runs for Quakertown (28-2). The Blue Jays have won all three of their games so far in this year’s tournament. Josh Myjack drove in a pair of runs for Wesleyville (22-3). Each team stranded 10 runners in the game. Quakertown now faces Bristol who defeated Hughesville in an elimination game earlier in the day. That contest is the afternoon game for day four of the tournament. The opening game features Bristol, who staved off elimination with a win over Hughesville, facing Wesleyville in a contest that featured teams with (2-1) tournament records.
