Trinity Knocks Off Two-Time Defending WPIAL Champion West Allegheny
The Trinity softball team still wishes the outcome of its Class 5A WPIAL quarterfinal game against West Allegheny last year was different, falling 4-3.
However, the Hillers were able to exact some revenge, knocking off the Indians, 9-4, at home on Wednesday.
The loss was the first in nearly two years against a WPIAL opponent for West Allegheny.
With a 2-2 score, Trinity opened the game up with a four run third inning. After a bases loaded walk gave the Hillers the lead, pinch hitter Sloan Altman hit a two-RBI single, followed by an RBI single by Bailey Bell.
Bell led the offense, going 4 for 4 with with two doubles, two runs and two RBI. Also recording multi-hit games for Trinity was Marlaina Bozek, Bayleigh McCullough, and Emma Morgan.
In the circle, sophomore Kylie Poland silenced West Allegheny, allowing only two earned runs and and struck out three.
With the win, Trinity improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the section. The Hillers will return to the field today when they host Ringgold in a non-section game at 4 p.m.
West Allegheny drops to 2-1 overall and in the section. The Indians will host Montour today in a section game at 3:45 p.m.
