The South Fayette girls’ basketball team took sole possession of second place in Section 1-5A with a 55-47 home win against defending WPIAL champion, Chartiers Valley.

The Lions won each of the first three quarters to build a 43-29 lead into the fourth quarter before the Colts made a mini comeback, but not enough to overcome the slow start.

Sam Kosmacki was the star for the Lions, finishing with 19 points. Junior Mackenzie Wagner had a team-high 19 points for the Colts, followed by 17 points by sophomore Megan McConnell.

The win improves South Fayette to 7-4 and 3-1. They will return to action on Friday when they host Lincoln Park at 7:30 p.m. Chartiers Valley slips to third place in the section with a 7-5 and 2-2. They will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they travel to Upper St. Clair at 7:30 p.m. in a non-section game.
