5A WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

South Fayette 64, Oakland Catholic 49

South Fayette (24-2) had rolled through the postseason up to the WPIAL Championship. Oakland Catholic (22-4) gave them everything they could handle but the team who had been there before found a way to pull out the 64-49 championship victory, giving South Fayette their third title in school history.

All postseason, South Fayette had jumped out to double digits leads in the first quarter, but things were a little different as Maddie Webber was in foul trouble for most of the first half and the biggest lead South Fayette held was 11-5. Oakland Catholic executed their game plan flawlessly in the first half and had the 25-23 lead at the half.

Things were tied 29-29 when South Fayette made their push going on a 10-4 run to get the six-point lead back. Ava Leroux stepped up big time with Webber out both scoring and on the glass as she finished with a double-double. The fourth quarter Webber and South Fayette took over as they extended the lead to double digits and came away with the 64-49 win.

Leroux finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds for South Fayette. Webber finished with 16 points while Lainey Yater added 12 points. Alexa Washington led Oakland Catholic with 16 points, 11 of them coming in the first half. Rachel Haver had 15 points.

Both teams will have first round home games in the state playoffs. South Fayette will host West York on Saturday, March 11 at a time to be determined. Oakland Catholic will host Manheim Central on Saturday, March 11 at a time to be determined.
