Two days after winning the Class 6A state championship, Pine-Richland quarterback Phil Jurkovec was announced as the Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year. The award is based on achievements on and off the field and in the classroom.

The Notre Dame verbal commit completed 245 of 337 passes (72.7 percent) and threw for 3,969 yards, which was third-highest in a single-season in WPIAL history.

On top of that, Jurkovec rushed for 1,224 yards on 135 carries (9.1 yards per carry) and 21 touchdowns. For his career, Jurkovec accumulated more than 11,000 yards.

This is the second time Pine-Richland had a quarterback win the Player of the Year. Ben DiNucci took home the honors in 2014. They finished as state runner-ups that year.
