Pine-Richland Wins Sixth Baseball Championship
Back on April 2, Penn-Trafford had its way with Pine-Richland, en route to a 13-2 run-rule victory.
The top two seeds met again on Thursday in the Class 6A WPIAL Championship Game at Wild Things Park with a very different result.
The Rams turned the tables, defeating the top-seed Warriors, 7-2, for its sixth championship in program history and fourth under head coach Kurt Wolfe.
Pine-Richland never trailed in the contest after jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
No. 9 hitter Wesley Byrd led Pine-Richland’s hit parade with three hits, including a double. Matt Wood had two hits, including a triple, two RBIs and walked three times. Josh Scherer and J.D. Armstrong had two hits apiece.
The Warriors were able to tie the game but a three-run fifth inning broke the game open for the Rams.
Pine-Richland improves to 18-4 on the season and will face District 3 third place opponent, Manheim Township, on Monday at Latrobe at 6:30 p.m.
Penn-Trafford falls to 18-3 and will face District 3 champion, Wilson, at Wenger Field in Fredricksburg at 4 p.m. on Monday.
