Pine-Richland Tops North Hills For First WPIAL Title, 70-53
Facing a familiar foe in the WPIAL championship game, the Pine-Richland Rams topped the North Hills Indians for a 70-53 triumph and first WPIAL title in program history. The Rams used a 12-0 run in the first quarter to pull away from their Section 3-AAAA rival and cruised toward victory. PR had last reached the WPIAL title game as a Class AAA program back in 2000 but lost to Blackhawk, 73-50.
Pine-Richland junior Andrew Petcash led the way with a game-high 21 points and surpassed the 1,000-point milestone for his career in the third quarter. North Hills was paced by junior Nick Smith who tallied 19 points, followed by Ish Waldron who had 17.
Pine-Richland improves to 19-6 overall and will face Bethel Park in the first round of the PIAA playoffs. North Hills dips to 16-8 on the season and will take on Latrobe on Saturday in the PIAA opening round.
