PIAA 6A Boys Basketball First Round Preview

BOYS BASKETBALL

PIAA 6A FIRST ROUND

10-1 Erie (16-9) at 7-2 New Castle (22-3) – 3 pm – Lawrence County Sportsnet

Erie was the No. 2 seed in the District 10 playoffs. They defeated No. 1 McDowell (47-45) to win the District 10 Championship. Erie then took down City League Champions Allderdice (62-58) in the District 6/8/10 Sub-Region Semifinals before falling to District 6 Champion State College (73-41) in the District 6/8/10 Sub-Region Championship. Erie is ranked #32 in the Maxpreps PA 6A rankings.

New Castle was the No. 1 seed in the District 7 playoffs. They beat No. 8 Norwin (59-47) and No. 4 Mt. Lebanon (58-42) before falling to No. 3 Central Catholic (61-52) in the WPIAL Championship. New Castle is led by Jonathan Anderson (1st team all-section) and Isaiah Boice (1st team all-section). New Castle is ranked #4 in the Maxpreps PA 6A rankings.

3-7 Wilson (19-9) vs. 7-1 Central Catholic (16-9) – at Gateway – 3:30 pm

Wilson was the No. 7 seed in the District 3 playoffs. They beat No. 10 Cedar Crest (48-40) in the District 3 First Round before losing to No. 2 Cumberland Valley (59-38) in the District 3 Quarterfinals. Wilson would come back to beat No. 6 Central York and No. 4 William Penn (67-58) to win the District 3 Seventh-Place Game. Wilson is ranked #40 in the Maxpreps PA 6A rankings.

Central Catholic was the No. 3 seed in the District 7 playoffs. They defeated No. 6 Baldwin (80-75 OT), No. 2 Upper St. Clair (65-41) and No. 1 New Castle (61-52) to win the WPIAL Championship. Central Catholic is led by Dante DePante (1st team all-section) and Debabab Tshiebwe (1st team all-section). Central Catholic is ranked #10 in the Maxpreps PA 6A rankings.

7-3 Upper St. Clair (16-9) at 6-1 State College (23-2) – 4 pm

Upper St. Clair was the No. 2 seed in the District 7 playoffs. They defeated No. 7 Seneca Valley (45-43) in the WPIAL Quarterfinals before falling to No. 3 Central Catholic (65-41) in the WPIAL Semifinals. Upper St. Clair would beat No. 4 Mt. Lebanon (55-54) in the WPIAL Third-Place Game to make the PIAA playoffs. Upper St. Clair is led by Nick Sukernek (1st team all-section) and Matthew Gaither (1st team all-section). Upper St. Clair is ranked #35 in the Maxpreps PA 6A rankings.
State College was the top seed in the District 6 playoffs. State College would beat No. 2 Altoona (69-49) to win the District 6 Championship. State College would then defeat District 10 Champion Erie (73-41) in the District 6/8/10 Sub-Regional Championship. State College is led by Braeden Shrewsberry (17.6 ppg), Isaac Dye (14.6 ppg) and Ryan Perks (11.7 ppg). State College is ranked #5 in the Maxpreps PA 6A rankings.
