PIAA 5A Girls Basketball Semifinal Recap: South Fayette advances to the state title game

PIAA 5A SEMIFINALS
South Fayette 58, Oakland Catholic 54
It has been a theme for South Fayette (28-2) for most of the postseason. Start fast, get a double digit lead, and roll from there. The Lions once again started fast, this time got push back from Oakland Catholic (25-5), but South Fayette was still able to hang on for a 58-54 win on Tuesday night at AHN Arena at Peters Township High School.
South Fayette made their first seven shots of the game scoring 15 points in the first four minutes. Oakland Catholic never led in the contest, but they chipped away and got the deficit all the way down to 46-44 in the fourth quarter. South Fayette’s Ryan Oldaker hit a three-point to make the score 49-44 but Oakland Catholic would score the next five points and a Rachel Haver layup tied things at 49-49 with four minutes to go. South Fayette would respond scoring the next five points getting a big three-point from Maddie Webber with about two minutes left to make the score 54-49. Oakland Catholic did everything they could to get back into the game but Ava Leroux was 4 for 4 from the free throw line in the final moments of the game and South Fayette survived with a 58-54 victory, sending them to the state championship.
Webber finished with 24 points for South Fayette. Haver led Oakland Catholic with 16 points while Jill Gallo added 13 points.
South Fayette advances to the state championship where they will battle it out with Archbishop Wood, the champion out of District 12, on Saturday at 6 pm at the GIANT Center in Hershey.
