PIAA 5A Girls Basketball First Round

GIRLS BASKETBALL

PIAA 5A FIRST ROUND

7-7 Penn-Trafford (17-9) at 3-1 Greencastle-Antrim (23-2) – 4 pm

Penn-Trafford was the No. 8 seed in the District 7 playoffs. They beat No. 9 Shaler (29-28) in the WPIAL First Round before falling to top-seeded South Fayette (70-49) in the WPIAL Quarterfinals. Penn-Trafford then lost to No. 4 Trinity (62-59) in the WPIAL Consolation Semifinals before defeating No. 11 Hampton (49-44) in the WPIAL Seventh-Place Game. Penn-Trafford is led by Olivia Pepple (17.3 ppg; 1st team all-section) and Lauren Marton (10.0 ppg; honorable mention all-section). Penn-Trafford is ranked #18 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.

Greencastle-Antrim was the top seed in the District 3 playoffs. They defeated No. 9 Susquehannock (49-33), No. 4 Mechanicsburg (42-24) and York Suburban (44-30) on their way to a District 3 championship. Greencastle-Antrim is led by Rylee Henson (18.0 ppg) and Mia Libby (12.0 ppg). Greencastle-Antrim is ranked #8 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.

3-4 Northern (21-4) at 7-3 McKeesport (21-5) – 2 pm – McKeesport Tigers Sports Network

Northern was the No. 2 seed in the District 3 playoffs. They defeated No. 7 West York (48-34) in the District 3 Quarterfinals before falling to No. 6 York Suburban (38-33) in the District 3 Semifinals. Northern would then fall to No. 4 Mechanicsburg (39-37 OT) in the District 3 Third-Place Game. Northern is led by junior forward Siena Ondecko who anchors the Polar Bear defense. Northern is ranked #15 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.

McKeesport was the No. 3 seed in the District 7 playoffs. They beat No. 14 Penn Hills (62-29) and No. 11 Hampton (55-44) before falling to No. 2 Oakland Catholic (58-51) in the WPIAL Semifinals. McKeesport bounced back against No. 12 Woodland Hills (68-38) in the WPIAL Third-Place Game. McKeesport is led by Rachael Manfredo (15.4 ppg; 1st team all-section). McKeesport is ranked #6 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.

3-5 Manheim Central (23-5) at 7-2 Oakland Catholic (22-4) – at Gateway – 2 pm

Manheim Central was the No. 3 seed in the District 3 playoffs. They beat No. 14 Warwick (47-26) in the District 3 First Round before falling to No. 6 York Suburban (44-40) in the District 3 Quarterfinals. Manheim Central would bounce back and defeat No. 7 West York (56-35) and No. 5 Lower Dauphin (53-38) in the District 3 consolation bracket to clinch District 3’s fifth seed. Manheim Central is led by Madison Knier who has over 2,000 career points. Manheim Central is ranked #22 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.

Oakland Catholic was the No. 2 seed in the District 7 playoffs. They defeated No. 15 Kiski Area (53-16), No. 7 Mars (63-42) and No. 3 McKeesport (58-51) before falling to top-seeded South Fayette (64-49) in the WPIAL Championship Game. Oakland Catholic is led by Alexa Washington (1st team all-section) and Halena Hill (1st team all-section). Oakland Catholic is ranked #4 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.

7-5 Trinity (18-7) at 10-1 Cathedral Prep (21-1) – 4:30 pm – WJPA

Trinity was the No. 4 seed in the District 7 playoffs. They defeated No. 13 Latrobe (68-61) in the WPIAL First Round before falling to No. 12 Woodland Hills (51-40) in the WPIAL Quarterfinals. Trinity would bounce back to beat No. 8 Penn-Trafford (62-59) and No. 7 Mars (46-42) to lock up the WPIAL’s fifth seed. Trinity is led by Eden Williamson (1st team all-section). Trinity is ranked #10 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.

Cathedral Prep is the only 5A school in District 10 girls basketball. They beat District 9 Champion DuBois (80-17) and City League champion Obama Academy (62-39) to win the District 8/9/10 Sub-Regional Championship. Cathedral Prep is ranked #5 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings. 

7-6 Mars (17-8) at 3-2 York Suburban (18-9) – 3 pm

Mars was the No. 7 seed in the District 7 playoffs. They beat No. 10 Lincoln Park (56-29) in the WPIAL First Round before falling to No. 2 Oakland Catholic (63-42) in the WPIAL Quarterfinals. Mars bounced back to defeat No. 11 Hampton (36-33) in the WPIAL Consolation but then lost to No. 4 Trinity (46-42) in the WPIAL Fifth-Place Game. Mars is led by Olivia Donnelly (1st team all-section). Annalyn Isaacs is also a 1st team all-section player but is ineligible for the postseason due to PIAA transfer rules. Mars is ranked #14 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.

York Suburban was the No. 6 seed in the District 3 playoffs. They defeated No. 11 Shippensburg (47-37), No. 3 Manheim Central (44-40) and No. 2 Northern York (38-33) in the District 3 playoffs before losing to top-seeded Greencastle-Antrim (44-30) in the District 3 Championship Game. York Suburban is led by Janay Rissmiller (13.2 ppg) and Lydia Powers (10.0 ppg). York Suburban is ranked #28 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings. 

7-4 Woodland Hills (13-13) at 3-3 Mechanicsburg (19-7) – 3 pm

Woodland Hills was the No. 12 seed in the District 7 playoffs. They defeated No. 5 Armstrong (53-48) and No. 4 Trinity (51-40) before losing to top-seeded South Fayette (68-25) in the WPIAL Semifinals. Woodland Hills would then fall to No. 3 McKeesport (68-38) in the WPIAL Third-Place Game. Woodland Hills is led by Hope Hawkins (1st team all-section). Woodland Hills is ranked #27 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.

Mechanicsburg was the No. 4 seed in the District 3 playoffs. They beat No. 13 Milton Hershey (49-31) and No. 5 Lower Dauphin (22-19) before falling to top-seeded Greencastle-Antrim (42-24) in the District 3 Semifinals. Mechanicsburg would rebound to defeat No. 2 Northern (39-37 OT) in the District 3 Third-Place Game. Mechanicsburg’s seniors have qualified for the PIAA tournament all four seasons. Mechanicsburg is ranked #23 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.

3-8 West York (13-13) at 7-1 South Fayette (24-2) – 4:30 pm

West York was the No. 7 seed in the District 3 playoffs. They beat No. 10 Red Land (43-29) in the District 3 First Round before falling to No. 2 Northern (48-34) in the District 3 Quarterfinals. West York would defeat No. 3 Manheim Central before falling to No. 12 Susquehannock (37-34) in the District 3 Seventh-Place Game. Reagan Doll is coming off of a 16-point performance in the District 3 Seventh-Place Game. Faith Walker had 13 points in that game. West York is ranked #33 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.

South Fayette was the top seed in the District 7 playoffs. They defeated No. 16 Plum (72-29), No. 8 Penn-Trafford (70-49), No. 12 Woodland Hills (68-25) and No. 2 Oakland Catholic (64-49) en route to a WPIAL Championship for the second consecutive season. South Fayette is led by Maddie Webber (1st team all-section), Ava Leroux (1st team all-section), Lainey Yater (1st team all-section) and Erica Hall (1st team all-section). South Fayette is ranked #1 in the Maxpreps PA 5A rankings.
