BOYS BASKETBALL

PIAA 5A FIRST ROUND

Mars 61, Manheim Central 49

Mars (17-10) went on the road and picked up a big time victory in the PIAA 5A First Round taking out Manheim Central (22-7) 61-49 on Friday night at Manheim Township High School. 

Mars’ leading scorer Tasso Sfanos was held to single digits on the night but Remi Black picked up the slack scoring 21 points. Ryan Ceh added 16 points. Trey Grube led Manheim Central with 18 points while Aaron Enterline had 14.

Mars advances to the PIAA 5A Second Round where they will take on District 10 champion Cathedral Prep on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

Penn Hills 63, DuBois 20

The top defense in 5A was at it again as Penn Hills (22-3) gave DuBois (11-14) trouble all night long and rolled to a 63-20 win on Friday night at Penn Hills High School.

Noah Barren led all scorers with 15 points for Penn Hills. Rob Thomas and Lamire Redman each had 12 points. Tyson Kennis had 12 points for DuBois.

Penn Hills advances to the PIAA 5A Second Round where they will take on Hershey, the third place team out of District 3, on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

Exeter 62, Fox Chapel 57

Fox Chapel (15-12) hung around all night but could never get over the hump as they fell to District 3 champ Exeter (24-6) 62-57 on Friday night at Exeter High School.

Kam Greil led Fox Chapel with 23 points. Jefferson Moorefield-Brown added 13 points while Caden Kaiser pitched in 10. Exeter was very balanced as Alex Kelsey had 13 points, Reece Garvin and Anthony Caccese each had 12 points. Zyion Paschall and Kevin Saenz each had 11.

Mechanicsburg 56, North Hills 52

North Hills (20-7) led at the half but was outscored 23-9 in the third quarter and could never make up the ground as they fell to Mechanicsburg (19-8) 56-52 at North Hills High School on Friday night.

Royce Parham led all scorers with 22 points for North Hills. Chance Yanoski had 17 points for Mechanicsburg while Josh Smith had 13 points.

Cathedral Prep 47, South Fayette 45

South Fayette (16-11) led through three quarters of play but were outscored 19-12 in the final frame and ultimately fell to Cathedral Prep (22-3) 47-45 at the Hagerty Family Events Center in Erie on Friday night.

Only two players scored for South Fayette as Elijah Hill had 30 points and Michael Plasko added 15 points. Semontae Lofton had 16 points for Cathedral Prep while Jake Sambuchino had 14.

Peters Township 60, Milton Hershey 53

In a game that was tied at the half, Peters Township (23-4) made just enough shots in the second half to come away with the 60-53 win over Milton Hershey (19-9) Friday night at AHN Arena at Peters Township High School.

Brendan McCullough had 21 points for Peters Township. Mickey Vaccarello added 14 points and Nate Miller pitched in 10 points. Malachi Thomas had 23 points for Milton Hershey while Larry Onabanwo had 18.

Peters Township advances to the PIAA 5A Second Round where they will take on the winner of Central Mountain and Lampeter Strasburg on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined. Central Mountain and Lampeter Strasburg play today at 5 pm.

Hershey 56, Gateway 55

Gateway (17-8) led by two points at the half but wasn’t able to hold off Hershey (20-7) as they fell 56-55 in a very tightly contested game on Friday night at Hershey High School.
Kaleb Pryor led all scorers with 23 points for Gateway. Matthew DeDonatis had 19 points for Hershey. Marcus Sweeny added 14 points while Logan Richards had 10.
