Peters Township Shocks Gateway In Final Seconds
Through the first half of Friday’s Class 5A WPIAL Semifinal at Gateway, it looked like it was going to be another exit for the second year in a row for Peters Township at the hands of the Gators.
After losing by a point to Gateway in the championship a year ago, the No. 3 Indians flipped the script, beating the No. 2 Gators, 20-19, advancing to their second straight WPIAL Championship Game.
Gateway jumped out to a 19-0 lead at halftime, only to see Peters Township shut them out in the second half.
The Indians got on the board in the third quarter on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Logan Pfeuffer to Nico Pate. Andrew Massucci’s extra point made it 19-7.
Before the third quarter ended, Pfeuffer connected with Donovan McMillon for 38 yards. The missed extra point made it 19-13.
After Peters defense made yet another stop, the offense got the ball back with a couple minutes left in the game, and began to drive.
Gateway looked like they sealed the game with a pick-six on 4th down, but a pass interference call kept the drive alive for the Indians, who delivered the game-winning score with four seconds left when Pfeuffer found Corban Hondru on a slant in the end zone. Massucci’s extra point gave the Indians the win.
Peters Township will face No. 1 Pine-Richland on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at North Allegheny High School.
