Penn Hills Football Collects Program Win No. 500
Heading into the 2018 season, Penn Hills marked Week 6 on its calendars. This week would be the quickest the school could reach milestone victory No. 500.
The Indians wasted no time achieving that feat with its seventh win of the season, a 34-3 win at Hampton on Friday night for its 500th win.
The Indians first program win came on Oct. 7, 1938.
It was a slow start for the Indians, as one of the top offenses in the WPIAL only held a 6-0 lead after the first quarter. Senior Hollis Mathis hooked up with junior Anthony Grimes for a 20-yard score and the first points of the game.
Penn Hills opened the game up in the second quarter, outscoring Hampton 16-3 to take a 22-3 lead at halftime. In the quarter, Grimes scored on a 5-yard run and senior Jordy Boswell found the endzone from three yards out. Senior Terry “Tank” Smith successfully ran in both 2-point conversions.
The Indians scored two more touchdowns in the second half, one in each quarter. In the third, senior Daequan Hardy pounded it in from two yards out and in the fourth quarter, Mathis threw his second touchdown pass of the game, a 51-yarder to senior Dante Cephas.
Mathis was very efficient, finishing the game 11 of 12 for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Along with his touchdown run, Hardy also hauled in five receptions for 97 yards.
Penn Hills improves to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in Section 3-5A. They remained entrenched at the top of the section standings and will host Shaler (3-4, 2-2) in a section game on Friday at 7 p.m.
Hampton drops to 2-5 overall and 1-5 in the section. The Talbots will host West Allegheny in a non-section game on Friday at 7 p.m.
