Norwin Sweeps Basketball Doubleheader

There weren’t many section games on Wednesday’s high school basketball schedule, but Norwin took care of both of theirs. In a boys/girls doubleheader, the Knights defeated Penn-Trafford in both games.

In a Class 6A Section 2 game, the girls jumped out of the gates and secured a 51-36 win. The Knights were in control from the start, opening up a 18-2 lead after the first quarter.

Sophomore Olivia Gribble led the way with 20 points, highlighted by six 3-pointers. Senior Mackenzie Aunkst led the Warriors with 17 points.

With the win, the Norwin girls team improves to 4-5 and 2-1 in the section. The will be back in action when they travel to Fox Chapel in a section game on Friday at 6 p.m. The Penn-Trafford girls team drops to 3-6 and 0-2 and will look snap their five game losing streak on Friday when they travel to Penn Hills at 6 p.m.

The boys game came down to the wire and then some, as Norwin prevailed 66-60 in overtime. Both teams were within striking distance all game, but the Knights found that extra edge, outscoring the Warriors 13-7 in the extra period.

Leading the way for Norwin was senior Josh Ratesic with 21 points and junior Gianni Rizzo with 17. Junior Kevin Stinelli paced the Warriors with 20 points.

With the win, the Knights improve to 6-4 and 1-2 in the section. They will travel to Fox Chapel on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Warriors drop to 4-7 and 1-2 in the section. They will look to snap their three game losing streak on Friday at Penn Hills at 7:30 p.m.
