Norwin Stuns Plum To Win WPIAL Crown
On Wednesday night at CONSOL Energy Park in Washington, Norwin did something no one else had done all season, beat the Plum Mustangs. The Knights knocked off the previously unbeaten Mustangs, 7-3, to win their first WPIAL title since 1960.
The 14th-seeded Knights used a five-run first inning to stun the top-seeded Mustangs. Jonathan Pingree had the big hit in the inning with a three-run triple. Norwin chased Plum ace Alex Kirilloff, a Liberty University recruit, in the second inning and added another run for a 6-0 lead. Despite being battered on the bump, Kirilloff launched a two-run homer in the third inning to cut the Norwin lead to 6-2.
In the fourth, Michael Anderson delivered an RBI single for Plum to trim the deficit to 6-3, but the Mustangs could come no closer. Norwin’s Chad Coles pitched a complete game and struck out eight batters to earn the victory.
Norwin improves to 16-7 on the season while Plum falls to 22-1. Both teams will participate in the PIAA playoffs which begin on Monday.
