North Allegheny Outruns Pine-Richland, 73-66
The North Allegheny girls’ basketball team won their fifth straight game with a 73-66 win over the Pine-Richland Rams in a Section 3-AAAA contest on Tuesday night. Pine-Richland led 22-21 midway through the second quarter, but the Tigers used a 15-6 half-ending run to take a 36-28 lead into halftime and seize command of the game.
North Allegheny stretched the advantage in the fourth quarter to as much as 16 points at 57-41 and coasted to the victory. Holding a size advantage over Pine-Richland in the paint, the Tigers outrebounded the Rams, 33-25, and shot 47 percent from the field. The Rams started out with hot shooting from the outside, paced by senior Caitlyn Byerly who hit 3 of 6 from beyond the arc and netted 15 first-half points. However, Byerly was blanked in the second half as Pine-Richland’s hot streak turned cold quickly.
North Allegheny senior Taylor Lake collected another double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and senior Abby Gonzales finished with 14 points and five steals. Junior Hailey Zeise chipped in with 12 points.
Gonzales, a University of Delaware recruit, was matched up most of the night with D-I recruit from Pine-Richland, Amanda Kalin. While Kalin finished 21 points, most of her damage was done with the game firmly in North Allegheny control in the fourth quarter. For her efforts on both sides of the ball, Abby Gonzales was selected as the Player of the Game.
North Allegheny stays perfect on the season with a 5-0 overall record and 2-0 mark in Section 3-AAAA. Pine-Richland slips to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in section play.
