New Castle Atones For 2013 PIAA Defeat, Tops Lower Merion In OT
The last time the New Castle Red Hurricanes lost a game it was to Lower Merion in the 2013 PIAA semifinals. Avenging that defeat, New Castle extended its regular season winning streak to 60 in a row with a 62-59 victory over the Aces in double overtime at the Kobe Bryant Classic on Saturday night.
Lower Merion led 59-56 before senior Drew Allen pulled off a four-point play to give the Red Hurricanes a lead they would never relinquish. With 11 seconds remaining in double overtime, Allen drained a three-pointer and was fouled. Converting the follow up free-throw attempt, Allen gave his team a 60-59 lead and the Red Hurricanes held on in the waning seconds for the victory. Allen finished the game with 15 points and senior Malik Hooker posted a game-high 17 points for New Castle.
The reigning WPIAL Quad-A champions are 14-0 on the season and will return to Section 3-AAAA play on Tuesday night with a home game against Pine-Richland. Start time is slated for 7:30 pm.
