NA Pulls Away In 4th For Section 3 Win Over Shaler

Posted on:

The North Allegheny Tigers surged into a first place tie in Section 3-AAAA with the Pine-Richland Rams courtesy of a 55-43 road win over the Shaler Titans on Thursday night in the MSA Sports and Quad-A Conference Girls’ Basketball Game of the Week.  The victory was NA’s ninth straight over the Titans.

While the scoreboard displayed a 12-point victory for North Allegheny, the game was played tightly throughout before the Tigers were able to extend the lead in the fourth period. The contest looked like it might be a rout early on as NA stormed out of the gates on an 11-0 run.  Junior forward Taylor Lake scored the first eight points of the game and when senior Devvin LaBarge followed with a 3-pointer, Shaler coach Neal Martin called a timeout so his troops could regroup.

North Allegheny led 13-2 before Shaler finally settled into the contest and exploded for a 12-2 run to cut the score to 15-14, Tigers, midway through the second quarter.  Titans’ senior Andi Lydon, a Central Connecticut State recruit, scored a pair of buckets during the run and back-to-back 3-pointers by Liz Kline and Rylee Donovan trimmed the Tigers lead to one-point.  From that point on in the first half the NA lead fluctuated between one and three points with the score at halftime leaning narrowly in favor of the Tigers, 23-22.

The game action in the third quarter mirrored that of the second period with both teams trading barbs. North Allegheny took a 31-29 lead into the fourth quarter before pulling away in the final stanza.  Lake, who was matched up much the night with the 6-1 Lydon, continued to frustrate the Titans in the paint and was a key contributor down the stretch in the 55-43 victory.  Lake finished with 16 points and a game-high seven rebounds, earning her Player of the Game honors from the Quad-A Sports Network.

In addition to Lake’s work down low, junior guard Abby Gonzales scored 16 points, 14 in the second half, and converted 8 of 10 free throws to put the game away.  LaBarge added 10 points and was 5 of 6 from the charity stripe.  Shaler was paced by Lydon who totaled 13 points and five rebounds.

The win gives North Allegheny a 12-2 record overall and 5-1 mark in Section 3-AAAA and sets the stage for a first place showdown on Monday night with Pine-Richland who also sits at 5-1 in the section.  Shaler falls to 12-3 overall and 4-3 in section play. Shaler visits Butler on Monday night.
