Moon Squeaks By Lower Dauphin In Overtime
The Moon boys basketball team knows the heartache of losing on a last second shot going back to the Class 5A WPIAL Championship Game.
Now the Tigers know the triumph of being on the other end. With two seconds left in overtime against District 3 champion, Lower Dauphin, in the PIAA quarterfinals on Friday, senior Jioni Smith hit the game-winning shot for a 51-50 victory.
The Tigers played the majority of the game with the lead, holding a 13-10 lead after the first quarter and same three point edge going into halftime.
The lead was trimmed to one entering the fourth quarter and was tied 45-45 after regulation.
Like he has all season long, junior Donovan Johnson paced the Tigers, scoring 20 of his 21 points in the first half. He was the lone Tiger in double figures.
Moon advances to the PIAA semifinals for the first time since 2008. The Tigers will have their shot at redemption when they square off against WPIAL champion Mars on Monday at New Castle at 7 p.m.
