Mars’ Offense Catches Fire In Second Half In Blowout Against Meadville

One way to assure a win is to make all of your shots. Mars nearly did that in the second half of its PIAA quarterfinals game on Friday night at Sharon High School against District 10 champion, Meadville.

The Planets converted on 14 of 16 shot attempts in the second half to break open the game and go on to win 73-57.

They were just as consistent from the free-throw line, finishing the game 19 of 22.

Mars held a 27-23 halftime lead and increased the lead to five entering the fourth quarter, but that is when they erupting for 27 points in the final eight minutes to put the game away.

This is familiar territory for the Planets, who will be competing in the PIAA semifinals for the third time in the last four years.

Mars spread the wealth with five players scoring in double figures, led by senior Andrew Recchia with 19 points. Senior Khori Fusco finished with 14 points and junior Michael Carmody had a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double. Senior Brandon Caruso chipped in with 12 and freshman Zach Schlegel scored all 10 of his points in the second half.

The Planets have now won 22 straight games. They will face Moon, who they defeated in the Class 5A WPIAL Championship Game on a last second shot, in the semifinals on Monday at New Castle at 7 p.m.
