Mars Girls Basketball Joins Boys Team In PIAA Championship Game
After watching the Mars boys basketball team clinch their spot in the Class 5A PIAA Championship Game earlier in the week, the girls team were looking to do the same.
The Planets had their semifinal game against Archbishop Carroll postponed twice before finally playing it on Saturday and coming away with a 52-39 win at State College High School.
The victory gave Mars the honor of becoming the sixth school in WPIAL history to have both teams compete for the state championship in the same season. It also marks the first title game appearance for the girls team in 41 years.
Mars jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Planets were able to play with the lead for the entire game from that point, making it harder on the Patriots.
Junior Tai Johnson led the Planets with a game-high 20 points. Also scoring in double figures were senior Lauren Wasylson with 13 and freshman Alek Johnson with 11 points.
Mars improves to 23-6 and will face District 12 champion Archbishop Wood in the PIAA Championship Game at the Giant Center in Hershey on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
