Mars Continues to Roll Through WPIAL Opponents
The Mars boys’ basketball team won its first WPIAL championship a little but over a week ago, but they continue to strengthen its grip on its WPIAL opponents in the PIAA playoffs.
After defeating Hampton for the second time in the postseason in the first round, the Planets did the same to Trinity in the second round with a 48-40 win at Moon.
Usually known for its offense, it was the defense that was the difference against the Hillers. The Planets held them to four points in the first quarter, but were held to four points of their own in the second and trailed 19-16 at the half.
Mars came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring Trinity 16-9 to take the lead for good.
Senior Robby Carmody scored half of his team’s points, finishing with 24 points. Senior Cade Hetzler chipped in with 13 points. Senior Joey Koroly led Trinity with 15 points.
Mars improves to 23-4 and won its eighth straight game. They will face Highlands in the PIAA quarterfinals on Friday at Gateway at 7:30 p.m.
