Mars Avenges Section Loss to Clinch Share Of Section Title
The Mars girls’ basketball team avenged an earlier season home loss to Hampton by defeating the Talbots 59-52 on Thursday Night to clinch a share of the section title.
Hampton defeated Mars 54-52 back on Jan. 15 to give the Planets their lone section loss of the season. The rivals both finished the section season 11-1.
Mars took control of the game in the third quarter after trailing 28-26 at halftime. The Planets outscored the Talbots 19-10 in the third quarter to take a 45-38 lead entering the final quarter.
Leading Mars in scoring was senior Lauren Wasylson with 20 points. Junior Tai Johnson finished with 17 points. Seniors Laryn Edwards and Ali Collins led Hampton with 22 and 21 points, respectively.
The Planets improved to 17-4 overall and won their eighth straight game and will look for their ninth straight win in the regular season finale on Monday when they host Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic at 6 p.m.
The Talbots drop to 17-4 on the season and will finish the season at Butler on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
