Late 3-Pointer Lifts West Allegheny Girls To First Section Title
The West Allegheny girls’ basketball team trailed most of the night in essentially what would turn out to be the section championship at South Fayette on Friday night.
The Indians trailed 50-41 entering the fourth quarter, but they just needed to have patience. That plan worked out when junior Patience Ashaolu connected on the game-winning 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left for the 58-55 win, and clinching the first share of the section title for West Allegheny in program history.
West Allegheny outscored South Fayette 17-5 in the final quarter and have now swept the Lions in the season series.
The Indians had four players score in double figures, led by junior Grace Faulk with 18 points. Ashaolu and junior Hanna Lindemuth finished with 11, and senior Melina Lynn added 10.
For the Lions, Sam Kosmacki had 12 points and Jordan Head finished with 10.
The win improves West Allegheny to 15-5 overall and 8-1 in Section 1-5A. The Indians will host Lincoln Park on Monday in the section final at 7:30 p.m. for a chance to win the section outright.
South Fayette drops to 12-5 overall and 7-2 in the section. Its section finale on Monday will be at Chartiers Valley at 7:30 p.m. That will be for second place in the section.
