Last Second Shot Sends Latrobe To Upset Win Against Penn Hills

Back on Dec. 21, the Latrobe girls basketball team suffered a 60-48 loss at Penn Hills.

It was a much different result the second time around at home on Thursday night.

With 6.9 seconds left, senior Kayla White made the game-winning shot to propel Latrobe to a 57-56 win against Penn Hills. It was the only points of the game for the senior.

The Indians had one more shot but senior Adia Brisker’s shot was off the mark.

The loss knocked Penn Hills into second place in Section 3-5A and improved Latrobe’s chances of making the playoffs as they are now in a fourth place tie with Penn-Trafford.

Penn Hills jumped out to a 8-1 lead but Latrobe fought back, ending the quarter on a 15-0 run to take a 16-10 lead. The Indians regained the lead, 31-15, heading into halftime.

The back-and-forth battle continued, as the Wildcats outscored the Indians 17-10 in the third quarter to take a 42-41 lead heading into the final quarter.

Latrobe was lead by senior Carly Augustine with 21 points. Augustine scored eight of her points in the third quarter comeback. Sophomore Rachel Ridilla finished with 14 points.

For Penn Hills, Brisker led the way with a game-high 22 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Senior Ariana Dunson finished with 19 points, 14 of which came in the second quarter.

With the win, Latrobe improves to 10-4 overall and 6-4 in the section. The Wildcats will host Laurel Highlands in a section game on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Penn Hills drops to 12-5 overall and 8-2 in the section. The Indians will host Uniontown on Tuesday in a section game at 6 p.m.
