Lady Knights Taste WPIAL Gold For First Time
The Norwin girls’ basketball team won its first ever WPIAL championship with a convincing 54-34 triumph over the Penn Hills Indians on Saturday night at the Peterson Events Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. The game was tied 11-11 after one quarter, but the Knights dominated the remainder of the game en route to the program’s first WPIAL crown.
Norwin junior guard/forward Alayna Gribble netted a game-high 21 points to lead the way for the Knights. Seniors Amanda Batey and Laura Buchanan chipped in with 11 points apiece.
Penn Hills sophomore standout Desiree Oliver scored a team-best 17 points. The Indians were looking for their first WPIAL title since 1995.
Norwin improves to 21-4 with the win while Penn Hills falls to 16-10. Both teams will compete in the PIAA tournament on Friday night.
