Kelsi Terzolino’s walk-off single sends defending champ Hempfield into semifinals
This is the first year in awhile that Hempfield hasn’t been the clear-cut favorite to win it all.
But they still may be the most dangerous team heading into the Class 6A WPIAL Semifinals next week after their 2-1 walk-off win against No. 6 Baldwin on Wednesday,
Sophomore Kelsi Terzolino lifted the No. 3 Spartans into the final four with her walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning at Gateway High School.
Entering the final inning, Hempfield held a 1-0 lead, but opposing pitcher and first-team all-section pick Addie Tagg, belted a solo home run in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
It was the only hit for sophomore Callie Sowers, who struck out 12 batters in the game.
Senior Laura Fox, a first-team all-section pick, led the offense with two hits, including a triple and scoring the Spartans first run.
With the win, Hempfield improves to 14-6 on the season and will play No. 7 Seneca Valley in the semifinals after they upset No. 2 Canon-McMillan, 8-4. The Spartans swept the regular season series against The Raiders.
