Hempfield Stays Alive For Fourth Straight PIAA Softball Championship
The Hempfield softball may not have been as dominant as recent years during the regular season, but the Spartans have hit their stride in the postseason.
After winning yet another Class 6A championship, Hempfield is still alive for a fourth straight PIAA championship after a 2-0 win against District 10 champion, McDowell, in the quarterfinals at North Allegheny High School on Thursday.
Sophomore Callie Sowers continued her dominance, who allowed five hits and struck out five in the complete-game shutout.
Sowers finally received the run support she needed from junior Ashley Orischak in the sixth inning. With two outs, Orischak delivered the game-winning two-RBI triple, scoring senior Laura Fox and sophomore Emma Hoffner.
With the win, Hempfield improves to 18-6 and will face District 3 champion, Central Dauphin, in the semifinals on Monday at Saint Francis University at 4 p.m.
