Hempfield Levels Kiski For Section 1 Victory
The playoff-bound Hempfield Spartans cruised past the Kiski Cavaliers for a 65-14 victory in a Section 1-AAAA contest on Thursday night.. After some brief sluggish play at the outset, Hempfield coach Aaron Epps called a timeout and the Spartans regained their form to top the Cavs for an easy victory. Hempfield jumped out to a 28-2 lead after one quarter and invoked the mercy rule by halftime.
Senior Monica Burns sparked the Spartans with 24 points and poured in four long-range treys. Displaying glimpses of why she was recruited by IUP to play at the Division II level, Burns also thieved numerous Kiski passes for a strong defensive night. Burns was named the Quad-A Network’s Player of the Game. In a complete effort, junior Lexi Irwin and sophomore Aubree Halusic added eight points apiece for Hempfield. The Cavaliers may have been outmatched but they are never without heart. Freshman Emily Cieslinski scored four points and senior Anyssa Sanchez added four. Sanchez left the game late with a lower body injury.
Hempfield jumps to 12-7 overall and 8-4 in Section 1. Kiski Area drops to 0-18 and 0-12 in the section. The Spartans continue with section play on Monday night with a visit to Albert Gallatin. The Cavs visit Norwin on Monday in a section matchup. Both games are slated for 7:30.
