The Gateway girls’ basketball team fended off a comeback attempt by Oakland Catholic to pick up a 37-35 Section 2-5A win and take control of second place in the section with one game remaining.

The Gators have now split the season series with the Eagles, who are in third place in the section. Both teams have already clinched playoff berths.

Gateway played from ahead the whole game, taking a 19-9 lead into halftime. It was not uncommon that the Gators relied on their defense, which has been their point of emphasis the whole season. Their 35.2 points allowed per game is tops in Class 5A.

SeniorĀ Jordan Edwards continues to lead the Gators, scoring 15 points. JuniorĀ Jayde Boyd led the Eagles with 14 points.

The win improves Gateway to 17-3 overall and 7-2 in the section. The Gators will go for their 10th straight win on Monday when they travel to West Mifflin at 7:30 p.m. in the section finale.

The loss drops Oakland Catholic to 11-7 overall and 6-3 in the section. The Eagles will host North Hills on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a non-section game.
