Gateway Girls Get Back In Section Race With Double Overtime Win
If the Gateway girls’ basketball team had any chance of earning a piece of the Section 2-5A regular season title, a win over first-place Thomas Jefferson was a must on Tuesday night.
The Gators gave it their all and then some with a 48-47 double overtime win at home. The two teams have now split the season series with Thomas Jefferson winning the first matchup on Dec. 21, 37-33.
Gateway held a 24-16 lead at halftime before the Jaguars stormed back to force overtime. Both teams scored five points in the first overtime, and the Gators outscored the Jaguars 8-7 in the second.
Leading the way for Gateway was senior Jordan Edwards with 19 points. Sophomore Lexi Jackson contributed with 16 points. Junior Jenna Clark led Thomas Jefferson with 15 points.
With its fourth straight win, Gateway improves to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in the section. They sit in third place, but are only a game out of first place. They look to keep it going on Friday when they travel to McKeesport for a 7:30 p.m. start.
The loss drops Thomas Jefferson to 13-3 and 5-1. They are now in a first-place tie with Oakland Catholic. They will look to rebound on Thursday when they host Woodland Hills.
