Gateway Extends Section Lead With Win Against Mars
Back on December 17, Mars, the defending Class 5A PIAA champion, defeated Gateway, the defending WPIAL champion, 54-42.
It was the first loss of the season for the Gators, who have responded well. Gateway hasn’t lost a section game since then, and got their revenge on Monday night at home, defeating the Planets, 48-39.
The Gators controlled the game from the opening tip, jumping out to a 13-2 lead after the first quarter. Gateway played the entire game with the lead, and it was big thanks to junior Lexi Jackson.
Jackson was a force on both sides of the ball, recording 16 points and 23 rebounds. Senior Mary Kromka finished with 14 points and sophomore Dynasty Shegog added 10 points.
For Mars, sophomore Ellie Coffield led the team with 11 points.
With the win, Gateway improves to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the section. The Gators will go for their fourth straight win on Thursday when they travel to Armstrong for a section game at 7:30 p.m.
Mars drops to 11-4 overall and 5-3 in the section. The Planets will host Ambridge tonight in a non-section game at 7:30 p.m.
