Football Class 5A WPIAL Championship Game Preview

It will be the battle of the Indians for the Class 5A WPIAL Championship on Friday night at Norwin High School at 7:30 p.m. Just like the Class 6A championship, this one will also feature the No. 2 vs. No. 5 seed.

No. 2 Penn Hills Indians (13-0) vs. No. 5 West Allegheny Indians (10-2)

Penn Hills passes its first test since its first game of the season, defeating No. 3 Peters Township, 22-14, in the semifinals that was also played at Norwin High School. The Indians are the second highest scoring offense in Class 5A, averaging 39.7 points per game. It isn’t all offense for Penn Hills as they reached the championship game, allowing only 9.8 points per game, including three shutouts. They have outscored its opponents 516-128 on the season. Penn Hills will be seeking its fifth WPIAL football championship and first since 1995…Always viewed as a constant contender in football, West Allegheny may be viewed as the surprise team in the title match this year after knocking off powerhouse Gateway, 42-28, in the semifinals at West Mifflin High School. The Indians scored the final 21 points in the game to pull off the upset. The one constant for the Indians has been head coach Bob Palko, who would like to finish off his coaching career with yet another WPIAL championship. On the season, West Allegheny is averaging 26.8 points per game and are allowing 18 points per game. The Indians have recorded two shutouts on the season in back-to-back weeks. West Allegheny will be seekings its second championship in three years…This is the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
