Defense Leads Mars to Section Win At Armstrong
The Mars girls’ basketball team won its sixth straight game on Thursday by continuing to play stellar defense, defeating Armstrong on the road, 43-33.
This was the third straight game the Planets held their opponents to under 35 points.
Mars jumped out to an early 13-5 lead in the first quarter that they held on for the remainder of the game. They allowed single digit points in three quarters. Armstrong’s highest scoring quarter was 10 points in the third.
Senior Lauren Wasylson was the only player in double figures for Mars with 11 points. Senior Kenzie Lasher and junior Loryn Bowser were in double figures for the River Hawks, scoring 12 points apiece.
The win improves Mars to 15-4 overall and 9-1 in Section 4-5A. The remain in the section race and are one game behind Hampton for first place. The Planets will host Franklin Regional on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in their last home section game.
Armstrong drops to 12-6 overall and 6-4 in the section. They are solidly in third place, and have clinched a playoff berth along with Mars. The River Hawks will host St. Marys on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in a non-section game.
