American Legion Day 2 Recap
Bristol 10 – Bushy Run 1
Day two opened with a battle between Bristol and Bushy Run in the losers bracket, with the winner staying alive and loser being eliminated. Bushy Run jumped ahead early on Carmen Metcalfe’s RBI double in the bottom of the first, but stranded two runners and came away with a one run lead. After a scoreless second inning, Bristol got on the board with Zach Lentchner coming home on an error and Andrew Armstrong hitting a two-run home run. Bristol added six more runs to take the game 10-1 and eliminate the Region seven champs Bushy Run. Bristol will play the loser of Hughesville and Wesleyville on Monday at 3:40 PM.
Belle Vernon 3 – Murrysville 2
An all-Westmoreland county battle got underway in game two on Sunday, with Belle Vernon and Murrysville battling to stay alive in the tournament. The host Murrysville struck first, with Max Bernadowski coming home on a groundout by Nolan Boehm. Blake Bertucci was spotless on the mound for Murrysville, no-hitting Belle Vernon through five innings with four strikeouts. Belle Vernon responded in the top of the sixth with JB Crovak’s RBI double to tie the game at one. Murrysville tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth off of Marko Roudek’s RBI single that scored Erik Streussnig. Belle Vernon never backed down, and added two runs in the top of the seventh, with Jake Wessel driving in the go ahead run on a double. Murrysville is eliminated from the tournament, while Belle Vernon plays Northeastern on Monday at 12:40 PM.
Quakertown 8 – Northeastern 4
The defending state champion Quakertown faced off with Northeastern in the winner’s bracket on Sunday. Quakertown opened up the scoring with five runs in the first inning and all nine players coming to bat. Northeastern came back in the top of the second and loaded the bases with no outs, but Quakertown’s starter Jarred Housten wiggled out of trouble, allowing just one run. They came back and added two more in the bottom of the second off of Cooper Natisin’s two-RBI double to build a seven run cushion. Housten continued to silence Northeastern, until three walks in the top of the fifth spelled the end to his outing. Brinden Floyd and Brandt Johnson both had RBI’s in the top of the fifth for Northeastern. Carl Weiss came in and shut the door on any other potential threat by Northeastern, and carried Quakertown to the finish line to win 8-4. Northeastern will play Belle Vernon at 12:40 PM on Monday, with the winner advancing and loser being eliminated. Quakertown will play the winner of Hughesville and Wesleyville Monday evening at 6:40 PM.
Wesleyville 8, Hughesville 0
Wesleyville remained in the winner’s bracket after it cruised to an 8-0 win over Hughesville Sunday night. Sam Lafuria dominated the game from the mount for Wesleyville dealing eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings before Reilly Brown added a strikeout in the last 1.2 frames. Wesleyville’s run support came in a rather unorthodox way, as teams concluded the game tied in hits, 4-4. Two runs came across in the first inning from a hit by pitch and wild pitch while two more in the fourth inning were generated by a walk-RBI and a passed ball. Yet another wild pitch in the fifth plated Wesleyville’s fifth run. After squashing a late Hughesville effort in the sixth inning, Wesleyville answered with three convincing runs in the bottom half of the window thanks in large part to an RBI-triple from Tyler Burick, the game’s lone extra-base hit. Josh Majczyk added to the show for Wesleyville after making an incredible diving catch in centerfield to sustain the shutout for the victors. Hughesville sent four pitchers into battle with Parker Persing suffering the loss after allowing the opening two runs in the first 2.0 innings. Tyler Wetzel, Jackson Bower and Aiden Barlett each tossed 1.1 innings as well.
