Colts Buck Blue Devils To Force Four-Way Tie Atop Section 4

The Chartiers Valley Colts dealt the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils their first section loss of the season with a 71-57 triumph on Friday night’s Quad-A Boys’ Basketball Game of the Week.  The victory for Chartiers Valley, along with wins by Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair, creates a four-way tie for first place in Section 4-AAAA, with all four teams owning 4-1 section records.

The game between CV and Mt. Lebanon was a clash of styles with the Colts’ thoroughbreds leading Quad-A with a scoring average of 80 points per game and the Blue Devils limiting foes to only 48 points per contest.  The run and gun offense of Chartiers Valley was faced with the difficult task of dealing with a much taller opponent as Mt. Lebanon boasts 6-8 center Patrick Ehland and 6-3 forward Matt Hoffman.  However, that height advantage for the Blue Devils never took shape because of early game foul trouble for both players.

In the second period is when the foul trouble for Ehland and Hoffman took its toll.  With both players sitting on the bench with two fouls, Chartiers Valley turned the game into a track meet and the Colts were off to the races.

The opening stages of the game saw both teams excel and this section battle was tied 22-22 early in the second quarter, but a half-ending 15-3 run by CV swayed the momentum.  Junior Eddie Flohr knifed through the defense for 13 first half points on his way to a 21 point performance and Robert Morris-recruit Matty McConnell poured in 20 first half points to lead the charge. McConnell delivered with three 3-pointers during the 15-3 run and ended the half with steal and last second shot before the buzzer to send the Colts to the locker room with a 37-25 lead.

Chartiers Valley extended the lead to 42-27 in the third quarter before the Blue Devils fought back.  Returning to the floor in the second half, Hoffman and Ehland combined for a pair of buckets, including an emphatic dunk by Ehland, to help trim the score to 47-37.  Senior Jonny David contributed to the rally and finished the game with a team-high 22 points.  Ehland tallied double figures as well with 12 points on the night.

The Blue Devils’ rally was short-lived as the Colts regained their stride and cruised to the finish line with a 71-57 victory.  McConnell netted a game-high 29 points and Ross Wilkerson chipped in with 18 points before fouling out.  McConnell, who reeled in several rebounds and steals in addition to his good shooting performance, was named the Player of the Game.

With the win, third-ranked Chartiers Valley improves to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in Section 4-AAAA.  Seventh-ranked Mt. Lebanon falls to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in section play. The Colts visit Moon next Tuesday night while the Blue Devils host rival Upper St. Clair.
