Collin Luther Scores 1,000th Point, Hampton Earns Second Round Win
Senior Collin Luther scored his 1,000th point and helped the Hampton Talbots to a 67-45 victory over the McDowell Trojans on Thursday night in the second round of the PIAA playoffs from Farrell High School. Collin Luther netted 10 points in the victory and joins his much ballyhooed twin brother, Ryan Luther, in the Hampton 1,000 point club. Additionally, Collin becomes the fourth Luther sibling in the 1,000 point club with Bill Luther Jr. and Jodie Luther having also recorded 1,000 points at Hampton.
The game was relatively close in the first half with the Talbots leading 25-21 at halftime, but Hampton took control of the contest by outscoring McDowell 26-8 in the third quarter. Joining Collin Luther in double figures was Ryan Luther with 14, Joey Lafko with 12, and Joe Huber with a team-high 15 points. McDowell’s top scorer was Andrew Stromenger who tallied 15 points in a losing effort.
The Hampton win avenges a defeat to McDowell in the PIAA second round last year and sets up a fourth meeting with the New Castle Red Hurricanes in the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs. Along with two regular season wins, New Castle topped Hampton in the WPIAL title game, 55-49, in the previous matchups. Saturday’s quarterfinal game will be played at a site and time to be determined.
Hampton improves to 24-4 on the season. McDowell finishes the year with a 23-4 mark.
