Central Catholic takes down New Castle to win 2nd WPIAL Title

Central Catholic 61, New Castle 52
Central Catholic (16-9) got a big night from Dante DePante and won their second ever WPIAL Championship with a 61-52 win over New Castle (22-3) on Saturday night at the Petersen Event Center.
Things were very tight in the first half, DePante paced Central Catholic with 11 points and the Vikings had a 27-23 lead heading into halftime. New Castle made a push in the third quarter and got the lead late in the quarter. DePante would answer with a 5-0 run of his own to end the quarter and Central Catholic led 38-34 heading into the final frame. Central Catholic carried the momentum they had from the third quarter into the fourth, got the lead up to double digits at one point and eventually came away with the 61-52 championship victory.
DePante finished with 29 points for Central Catholic. Cole Sullivan added 16 points. Jonathan Anderson led New Castle with 22 points. Da’Juan Young had 14 points. Central Catholic outrebounded New Castle 27-20 and New Castle only shot 4 of 17 from behind the arc.
Both teams will start the state playoffs with a home game. Central Catholic will host Wilson on Saturday, March 11 at a time to be determined. New Castle will host Erie High on Saturday, March 11 at a time to be determined.
