Penn Hills Football Collects Program Win No. 500

Heading into the 2018 season, Penn Hills marked Week 6 on its calendars. This week would be the quickest the school could reach milestone victory No. 500.

The Indians wasted no time achieving that feat with its seventh win of the season, a 34-3 win at Hampton on Friday night for its 500th win.

The Indians first program win came on Oct. 7, 1938.

It was a slow start for the Indians, as one of the top offenses in the WPIAL only held a 6-0 lead after the first quarter. Senior Hollis Mathis hooked up with junior Anthony Grimes for a 20-yard score and the first points of the game.

Penn Hills opened the game up in the second quarter, outscoring Hampton 16-3 to take a 22-3 lead at halftime. In the quarter, Grimes scored on a 5-yard run and senior Jordy Boswell found the endzone from three yards out. Senior Terry “Tank” Smith successfully ran in both 2-point conversions.

The Indians scored two more touchdowns in the second half, one in each quarter. In the third, senior Daequan Hardy pounded it in from two yards out and in the fourth quarter, Mathis threw his second touchdown pass of the game, a 51-yarder to senior Dante Cephas.

Mathis was very efficient, finishing the game 11 of 12 for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Along with his touchdown run, Hardy also hauled in five receptions for 97 yards.

Penn Hills improves to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in Section 3-5A. They remained entrenched at the top of the section standings and will host Shaler (3-4, 2-2) in a section game on Friday at 7 p.m.

Hampton drops to 2-5 overall and 1-5 in the section. The Talbots will host West Allegheny in a non-section game on Friday at 7 p.m.

West Allegheny Baseball Edges Hampton to Reach PIAA Tournament

While the Class 5A Baseball Championship Game was being played out at Wild Things Park on Wednesday night, the consolation game between West Allegheny and Hampton was taken place right next door at Washington & Jefferson’s Memorial Field to see who the final team would be to advance to the PIAA tournament.

After suffering only its second loss of the season in the WPIAL semifinals, West Allegheny with a 6-5 victory against Hampton to extend their season.

The Indians scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Adam Crawford scored on a wild pitch.

Offensively for West Allegheny, junior Shea Downing went 2 for 3 with three RBI and classmate Evan Ferretti belted a home run.

For Hampton, junior Burke Camper went 2 for 4 with two RBI.

Hampton’s season ends with a 16-6 record. West Allegheny improves to 14-2 and will play Cathedral Prep out of Erie, PA in the PIAA first round on Monday.

Mars Baseball Punches Ticket To Class 5A Championship Game

For the second year in a row, the Mars baseball team will have a shot at playing at Wild Things Park in Washington, Pa. for the Class 5A championship.

After losing in the title game last year, the Planets earned their return trip with a 4-0 win against their section rival, Hampton, at North Allegheny High School on Thursday.

The two teams split the regular season series, but it has been Mars who have been the more dominant team of late, recording shutouts in the last two meetings against the Talbots.

A big part of that is due to the pitching performance of junior Will Bednar. Bednar pitched a complete-game, with 12 strikeouts and no walks.

The score remained 0-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Mars broke through with two runs on a bloop hit by senior Anthony Michalski for a 2-0 lead. That would be all the support Bednar needed, but the Planets tacked on insurance run later in the inning on a double by freshmen Mitchell Shultz and a bases loaded walk in the fifth inning with junior Tyler Kowalkowski at the plate.

The win improves Mars to 15-5 overall and is their eighth win in a row. They will face another section rival, North Hills, in the championship on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Hampton drops to 13-5 overall and will face West Allegheny in the Class 5A Consolation game next Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a spot in the PIAA playoffs.
