Chartiers Valley blows past Moon, 61-20

Chartiers Valley led start to finish, getting stronger as the game went on as they dominated Moon for 32 minutes in a Section 2-5A game Tuesday night.

Chartiers Valley press gave Moon fits from the opening tip forcing tons of turnovers and scoring in transition. After a quarter, Chartiers Valley had a 15-6 lead and by half they had extended it out to 31-12. Jared Goldstrom had eight of his 10 points in the first half with numerous steals. For his efforts, he was the PlayerPager Player of the Game.

The second half was more of the same with Chartiers Valley putting the cherry on top in the fourth quarter pitching a shutout, outscoring Moon 13-0 and ultimately winning the game 61-20.

Sean Banas and Legister Marcello each had 12 points for Chartiers Valley while Griffin Beattie had 8.

Logan Young and Connor Graham each had six points for Moon.

Chartiers Valley improves to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in Section 2-5A. The Colts head to Montour on Friday to take on the Spartans in another Section 2-5A matchup at 7:30 p.m.

The defending state champs fall to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in Section 2-5A. Moon heads to Thomas Jefferson on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tip against the Jaguars in a section matchup.

Chartiers Valley Completes Perfect Season With First State Title

It didn’t take long for history to repeat itself. A day after the Peters Township girls basketball team became the fourth WPIAL team to finish a perfect season with its first state title, the Chartiers Valley girls basketball team did the same.

With a 53-40 win against District 12 champion, Archbishop Carroll, at the Giant Center in Hershey in the Class 5A PIAA Championship Game, the Colts moved to 30-0 and claimed its first state title in program history.

Chartiers Valley never trailed in the game, but the game still remained close in the first half. The Colts led 23-20 at the half, but opened the game up in the third quarter, outscoring the Patriots 19-9.

The Colts outshot the Patriots, 56 percent (18 of 32) to 28 percent (13 of 45) and used their size to outrebound them, 32-17.

Chartiers Valley was led by senior Mackenzie Wagner with a game-high 24 points. She was an efficient 8 of 10 from the field. Senior Gabi Legister was a force down low, finishing with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Freshman Aislin Malcolm made an impact, scoring six points and dishing out six assists. Junior Megan McConnell finished with five points but had a game-high 10 rebounds as the point guard.

Congratulations to Chartiers Valley with all that they accomplished this season!

Char Valley Defeats Thomas Jefferson for 4th Time; Advances To Title Game

It is easy to say the Chartiers Valley girls basketball team had Thomas Jefferson’s number this season.

The Colts defeated the Jaguars four times this season, including in the Class 5A WPIAL Championship Game and most recently, a 50-44 win in the PIAA semifinals on Tuesday at Peters Township High School.

As they have all season long, Chartiers Valley played with an early lead, jumping out to a 16-10 lead after the first quarter.

Thomas Jefferson was able to cut it to three, 22-19, at halftime, but was never able to make it over the hump.

The Colts were led by freshman Aislin Malcolm with 12 points. Senior Mackenzie Wagner and junior Megan McConnell each tallied 10 points.

Mike McConnell, who has had his fair share of success as the coach of the boys team, including six WPIAL titles, will be seeking his first state championship trophy.

Chartiers Valley (29-0) will have one more obstacle when they face District 12 champion, Archbishop Carroll (25-5) in the Championship Game on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Chartiers Valley Holds Off Oakland Catholic For PIAA Semifinal Appearance

The Chartiers Valley girls basketball team hasn’t had to endure too much stress this season, winning convincingly in almost every game.

That wasn’t the case on Saturday in its PIAA quarterfinal game against Oakland Catholic at Peters Township.

The Colts were able to hold off the pesky Eagles, coming away with a 46-43 win.

Oakland Catholic had an opportunity to tie at the buzzer, but its 3-pointer was no good.

Chartiers Valley trailed by one entering the fourth quarter, but limited Oakland Catholic to seven points, its lowest scoring quarter of the game.

The Colts took the lead in the final minute by connecting on 3 of 4 free throws.

The Eagles held a 34-28 lead in the third quarter, but that is when senior Mackenzie Wagner took over. Wagner hit back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the score.

Wagner scored 14 of her team-leading 17 points in the second half, including a perfect 6 for 6 from the free-throw line. Junior Megan McConnell and freshman Aislin Malcolm finished with 11 points apiece.

For Oakland Catholic, senior Alexis Sestric had a game-high 19 points. Senior Sierra DeAngelo finished with 18 points.

Chartiers Valley improves to 28-0 and will go for its fourth win of the season against Thomas Jefferson in the PIAA semifinals on Tuesday at Peters Township at 7 p.m.

Chartiers Valley Undefeated WPIAL Season Ends With Title

Chartiers Valley Head Coach Tim McConnell knows the feeling of winning a championship with his sons. Now he knows the feeling of winning one with his daughter, Megan.

The McConnell’s and No. 1 Chartiers Valley completed the perfect WPIAL title run, knocking off No. 6 Thomas Jefferson for the third time this season, 64-48.

It is the second WPIAL title in three for the Colts.

Four of Chartiers Valley’s starters scored in double figures with junior Megan McConnell and freshman Aislin Malcolm leading the way with 18 points apiece. Seniors Gabi Legister and Mackenzie Wagner finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The Colts’ defense played a pivotal role in the win as well, holding Thomas Jefferson to single digits in the first three quarters. The game was broken open during a 15-0 run in the second quarter.

Chartiers Valley also flexed its muscles on the glass, outrebounding Thomas Jefferson, 35-16. Both teams made eight 3-pointers in the game.

Thomas Jefferson was led by senior Jenna Clark with a game-high 19 points. Junior Alyssa DeAngelo finished with 17 points.

Girls Basketball Class 5A Championship Preview

No. 1 Chartiers Valley Colts (24-0) vs. No. 6 Thomas Jefferson Jaguars (19-6) At Petersen Events Center, 3 PM

Chartiers Valley and Thomas Jefferson have taken two separate paths to the Class 5A WPIAL Championship Game. Chartiers Valley, under first year head coach Tim McConnell, hasn’t felt the feeling of defeat this season. McConnell has won six WPIAL titles with the Chartiers Valley boys team and is seeking his first with the girls. The Colts knocked off No. 4 Penn Hills at Fox Chapel, 45-37, to advance to the Petersen Events Center. Just like they have all season long, Chartiers Valley has been relying on its defense, holding the Indians to under 10 points in three out of the first four quarters. Offensively, senior first-team all-section guard Mackenzie Wagner led the way with 25 points. The Colts are in the Championship Game for the second time in three years. They defeated Oakland Catholic for the title in 2017, 52-36…Thomas Jefferson is arguably the hottest team in the playoffs right now, winning each game by double digits, including against two section champions, Gateway and Oakland Catholic. On Wednesday, the Jaguars defeated Oakland Catholic, 68-55. The win punched Thomas Jefferson its first WPIAL Championship Game appearance in 39 years. The catalyst for the victory was first-team all-section guard, Jenna Clark. Clark finished with 30 points. Also contributing was Alyssa DeAngelo with 21 points. The Jaguars broke the game open with a 23-9 third quarter after being tied at halftime…These teams are familiar with each other as section foes during the regular season. Chartiers Valley won both meetings, 68-50 on Jan. 16 and 41-38 on Jan. 24.

Girls Basketball Class 5A Semifinal Preview

Three of the four teams that received byes have advanced to the semifinals, but the hottest team may be the one that has played through the first round, Thomas Jefferson.

Both games tonight will be played at 6 p.m. on a neutral court.

No. 1 Chartiers Valley Colts (23-0) vs. No. 4 Penn Hills Indians (16-6) At Fox Chapel

Chartiers Valley had its worst offensive output of the season the quarterfinals against No. 9 Trinity, but were still able to come away with a 32-22 victory to remain undefeated on the season. The Colts were held without a field goal for the final 12:46 of the game but relied on its defense to get grind out the win, including only allowing one point in the first quarter. Junior Megan McConnell was the only player in the game in double figures with 12 points. In last year’s semifinals, Chartiers Valley lost a heartbreaker to Gateway, 44-42…Penn Hills has played a tough schedule throughout the season, which has prepared them for this point in the season. The Indians disposed of a tough No. 5 Franklin Regional team in the quarterfinals, 55-43. Penn Hills won every quarter in the game to increase its lead. They were led by senior Adia Brisker with 20 points. Fellow senior Tayonna Robertson added 13 points. Penn Hills last played in the quarterfinals two years ago when they suffered a 41-36 loss to Bethel Park…This is the first meeting of the season between these two teams.

No. 2 Oakland Catholic Eagles (20-3) vs. No. 6 Thomas Jefferson Jaguars (18-6) At North Allegheny

This match-up was set up after one team blew away the defending PIAA champion and another did the same to the defending WPIAl champion. Oakland Catholic defeated the former, No. 7 Mars, in the quarterfinals on Saturday, 67-45. The Eagles only led by two after one quarter but pulled away in the second for a 31-16 halftime lead. Senior Sierra DeAngelo had a huge game with 33 points. Senior Jayde Boyd finished with 16 points. Oakland Catholic defeated Mars in the semifinals last year, 48-44…Thomas Jefferson has made its first two playoff games look easy, outscoring its opponents, 158-84. That included a 79-52 win in the quarterfinals against defending WPIAL champion, Gateway. Leading the way for the Jaguars was senior Jenna Clark with 29 points. Junior Alyssa DeAngelo finished with 22 points and junior Dalaney Ranallo added 10 points. This is the second meeting of the season between Oakland Catholic and Thomas Jefferson. The Eagles won the first, 58-47, on Dec. 28 in the Oakland Catholic Holiday Tournament.
