Carney’s Buzzer Beater Lifts Butler Into Semifinals
Penn-Trafford tied the game with less than 10 seconds left in overtime, but it was enough time for junior Devin Carney to make it down court and threw up an off balanced 3-pointer that found nothing but net to lift No. 5 Butler (12-8) over No. 4 Penn-Trafford (13-6), 58-55.
Carney finished with a team-high 21 points and Mattix Clement finished with 18 points.
The Golden Tornado outscored the Warriors 9-6 in the extra frame. They also held a three point lead at the half before Penn-Trafford tied it up to force overtime.
The defending Class 6A WPIAL champions will have a rematch with Upper St. Clair, who they defeated in the semifinals last year, as well as the PIAA second round, a day before the COVID shutdown of the season.
The top-seeded Panthers (18-1) will host Butler on Tuesday, March 9 at 6 p.m.
