Canon-McMillan Stuns North Allegheny For Girls Volleyball Title
Canon-McMillan came as the David to North Allegheny’s Goliath for Saturday’s Class 4A Girls Volleyball WPIAL Championship at Fox Chapel High School.
The No. 3 Big Macs (16-2) were seeking their first title in program history, while the No. 1 Tigers (18-1) were riding a 65-match win streak dating back to 2016.
After falling behind 2-1, Canon-McMillan rallied to win a five set thriller, 11-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-17, 15-12.
The first set was all Tigers where they had leads of 7-2 and 18-8 before winning the set 25-11. The second set went to the Big Macs 25-23. The third set saw the Tigers come back from down 17-13 to tie the game at 18-18 and then eventually won the set 26-24. The fourth set was dominated by the Big Macs who won the set 25-17. In the fifth set, the Big Macs jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held onto a 15-12 win.
Junior Jenna Vogen had five service aces, 17 kills and 18 digs for the Big Macs.
Morgan Galligan recorded 25 digs, five kills and 29 assists in the setting role for most of the match. Sam Parker, Abby Thornbury and Vicky Manda all had six kills.
Both teams will advance to the PIAA playoffs, which begins on Tuesday.
