Boys’ Soccer: Class 4A semifinals
It will be a battle of the North and South with two teams from Section 1 and two from Section 2 for the right to compete for the Class 4A championship next week at Highmark Stadium. Below are matchup capsules for both games today.
Peters Township (16-0-1) vs. Pine-Richland (13-4-1) At West Allegheny (4 p.m.)
The Indians have been the team to beat in Class 4A since the beginning of the season and still serves as the only team in the classification without a loss. In the playoffs, the Indians have outscored their opponents 6-1 in two games, including a 4-1 win against Butler in the quarterfinals. The Rams entered the playoffs as the third place team in their section, but were able to win a couple of one-goal wins in the first two rounds to advance to their second straight WPIAL semifinal. They defeated Seneca Valley in the quarterfinals, 2-1 and 4-3in penalty kicks. The Indians and Rams have not faced each other this season.
North Allegheny (17-2-1) vs. Canon-McMillan (12-6) At Mars (3 p.m.)
The defending WPIAL champion, is one win away from returning to Highmark Stadium. The Tigers have got to this point with their defense as they have not allowed a goal in two games this postseason. North Allegheny pulled out its second straight 1-0 win in the quarterfinals against Upper St. Clair, scoring 35 seconds into the contest. If there was to be a Cinderella team in the semifinals, the Big Macs would be it. Canon-Mac finished as the third team in their section won both playoff games in extra time. After a overtime win in the first round, the Big Macs defeated Franklin Regional 2-1 and 5-3 in penalty kicks. The Tigers and Big Macs have not faced each other this season.
