Baseball & Softball Preview: 4/10/23

BASEBALL

6A SECTION 1

Pine-Richland (6-3, 1-2) at Allderdice (1-3, 0-3) – 3:30 pm

Pine-Richland started the season well as they won their first 4 games and went into section play with a 5-1 record. They 10-runned Butler (12-2) in the first game of the section series but Butler would take the next two games (5-4, 8-6) to win the series. 

Allderdice won their opener, 5-1, against Keystone Oaks but then went into section play and got swept by Seneca Valley by scores of 9-3, 14-0 and 11-0. 

Pine-Richland swept Allderdice a season ago by scores of 5-4 and 4-2.

6A SECTION 2

Canon-McMillan (5-1, 3-0) at Norwin (2-5, 2-1) – 4 pm

Canon-McMillan fell to Bethel Park, 1-0 in their home opener but have won five games in a row since, including a section series sweep of defending WPIAL champion Mt. Lebanon in their 3-game series. Canon-McMillan won the section games by scores of 9-4, 5-2 and 8-7.

It was a rough non-section start for Norwin as they started the season 0-4 but was able to turn it on in section play as they took two out of three from Baldwin. Norwin won the first game 10-5, Baldwin bounced back to take game two, 4-3. Then Norwin won the rubber match by a score of 13-3.

Canon-McMillan swept Norwin last year by scores of 2-1 and 4-1.

Baldwin (3-5, 1-2) at Hempfield (4-3, 2-1) – 4:15 pm – Westmoreland Sports Network

Baldwin went 2-3 on their Myrtle Beach trip winning the first and last game of the trip. They returned north but struggled in their first section series as Norwin took two of three from them. Baldwin won the middle game of the section series 4-3, but fell in the first and last game of the series 10-5 and 13-3.

Hempfield has had an up-and-down start to the year. They dropped their first two non-section games to Pine-Richland and Penn-Trafford. They bounced back to win their next two games to go 2-2 in non-section play. After dropping the opening game of the series to Central Catholic (8-6), Hempfield bounced back to win the next two to take the series, 2-0 and 7-3.

Baldwin and Hempfield split the season series in 2022. Hempfield won the first game of the series, 7-4. Baldwin bounced back to win the second game of the series, 5-3.

This game will be broadcasted live on the Westmoreland Sports Network. 

Central Catholic (2-3, 1-2) at Mt. Lebanon (0-7, 0-3) – 4:15 pm

Central Catholic split their two games in Myrtle Beach, defeating St. Joseph Academy (20-8) and falling to Pennsbury (4-0). Central Catholic returned to Pittsburgh to take on Hempfield in their opening section series and won the first game, 8-6, before falling in the next two games, 2-0 and 7-3. 

The defending champions have started 0-4 in their non-section play tune-ups. They got into section play and were swept by Canon-McMillan by scores of 9-4, 5-2 and 8-7. 

Central Catholic and Mt. Lebanon met in the WPIAL Semifinals a season ago at West Mifflin. Mt. Lebanon won the game 2-1 and went on to win the WPIAL title.

5A SECTION 3

New Castle (0-4, 0-2) at Shaler (7-1, 2-0) – 4 pm

It has been a slow start for New Castle as they dropped non-section contests to Neshannock (0-4) and Beaver (5-1) before getting swept by North Hills in their first section series by scores of 11-1 and 14-3. 

Shaler has had a phenomenal start to the season going 4-1 in non-section play, sweeping Moon in their first section series by scores of 4-0 and 23-6, then kept the bats going by taking down Knoch, 17-0, in a non-section game on Thursday. Shaler has scored 40 runs in their last two games.

SOFTBALL

NON-SECTION

Mars (3-2) at Hampton (5-1) – 4 pm

Mars went 2-1 in non-section play to start the season falling to Shaler (12-1) in the opener then defeating Hopewell (12-6) and Knoch (8-3). They split their first two section games as they fell to Western Beaver (8-7) in their section opener then bounced back to beat South Fayette, 4-2.

Hampton went 2-0 in their non-section schedule to start the season. They defeated Blackhawk (6-3) in their section opener. They fell to Beaver (7-4) in section play but have bounced back to win their last two games against Ambridge (11-1) and North Catholic (12-0).

These two teams were section opponents a year ago before Hampton dropped to 4A. The teams split the season series as Mars won the first game 12-2 and Hampton won the second game 9-5.
