6A FIRST ROUND

Peters Township 62, Butler 49

8th-seeded Peters Township (13-10) used a big second quarter to get enough of a lead to hold off 9th-seeded Butler (11-12) 62-49 at Peters Township Monday night in the WPIAL 6A Girls Basketball First Round.

Things got off to a very tight start with both teams feeling each other out. Slow possessions led to Peters Township leading 8-6 after a quarter of play. In the second quarter, Peters Township’s offense got going as they would outscore Butler 22-12 in the quarter and take a 30-18 lead into the locker room.

With their season on the line, Butler had the answer in the third quarter and they were able to get the deficit back down to single digits at 45-36 heading into the final frame. Peters Township would continue to keep Butler at arm’s length throughout the fourth quarter and came away with the 62-49 victory.

Sami Bewick and Natalie Wetzel both had 17 points for Peters Township. Peri Cendroski added 16 points. Amelia McMichael had 22 points for Butler while Syd Patterson had 12.

Peters Township advances to the WPIAL 6A Girls Quarterfinals where they will take on Upper St. Clair on Thursday at Upper St. Clair at a time to be determined.
