5A BOYS QUARTERFINALS

#8 South Fayette (14-9) vs. #1 Peters Township (20-3) – at Bethel Park – 7 pm – WJPA

South Fayette is coming off of a thrilling 34-33 victory in the WPIAL First Round over Shaler. Elijah Hill hit the go-ahead free throw with eight seconds remaining to come away with the win at home. Michael Plasko led South Fayette that night with 19 points. South Fayette is led by Hill who finished the regular season averaging 22.1 points per game. Hill finished 5th in 5A in scoring.

Peters Township is coming off a 66-55 win over Penn-Trafford in the WPIAL First Round. Peters Township had a 12-point lead at halftime, but Penn-Trafford got it down to six in the fourth quarter before Peters Township pulled away. Brendan McCullough had 17 points for Peters Township, Jack Dunbar had 13 points, Jake Ziegler pitched in 12 points and Nate Miller netted 10 points. Peters Township is led by Dunbar who finished the regular season averaging 18.1 points per game. Dunbar ended the regular season 8th in 5A in scoring.

These two teams met on December 20 at Peters Township and it was the home Indians who came away with a narrow 71-70 victory.

#12 McKeesport (10-10) vs. #4 Gateway (16-5) – at Norwin – 8 pm – Gateway Gator Productions & KDKA

McKeesport is coming off a 56-50 upset victory on the road at Moon. Travarese Rowe led McKeesport in scoring with 20 points that night. Aemond Knight hit a buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter that really flipped the momentum in that game. McKeesport is led by Rowe who finished the regular season averaging 20.2 points per game. Rowe finished 6th in 5A in scoring.

Gateway is coming off a 55-40 home win over Woodland Hills in the WPIAL First Round. Jaydon Carter had 20 points and was huge from the free throw line at the end of the game. Kaleb Pryor also had 11 points in that game.

These two teams split the regular season series with the road team winning each matchup. Gateway won on January 3, 74-65 at McKeesport. McKeesport returned the favor on January 27 winning 68-62 at Gateway.

#7 Mars (15-8) vs. #2 Penn Hills (18-3) – at Chartiers Valley – 8 pm – TribLive HSSN

Mars is coming off an impressive 76-40 statement victory over Bethel Park in the WPIAL First Round. Tasso Sfanos led the way with 26 points while Ryan Ceh added 18 points. Mars is led by Sfanos who finished the regular season averaging 25.8 points per game. Sfanos ended the regular season 4th in 5A in scoring.

Penn Hills is coming off a 38-29 defensive struggle against Trinity in the WPIAL First Round. Daemar Kelly had 21 points in that game and was 13 of 14 from the free throw line. Penn Hills is led by Kelly who finished the regular season averaging 15.4 points per game. Kelly finished 15th in 5A in scoring.

#11 Fox Chapel (14-9) vs. #3 North Hills (18-5) – at North Allegheny – 8 pm – TribLive HSSN

Fox Chapel is coming off an impressive 62-45 upset victory on the road at Thomas Jefferson. A 9-0 run to finish the second quarter and a big fourth quarter helped Fox Chapel pull away in the game. Kam Greil led Fox Chapel that night with 20 points while Jefferson Moorefield-Brown helped netting 16 points.

North Hills is coming off a 76-71 victory over a stubborn Kiski Area squad that had the lead for most of the night. North Hills did not grab the lead until midway through the fourth quarter but was able to hold it from there and escape with the victory. Royce Parham carried most of the load for North Hills with 30 points in the game. Freshman Eric James added 18 points. North Hills is led by Parham who finished the regular season averaging 29.1 points per game. Parham finished as 5As scoring champion.

This game is a rematch of last season’s WPIAL 6A Boys Championship Game. Fox Chapel won that one 43-36 at the Petersen Event Center.
