Moon Passes Toughest Test At Chartiers Valley

The Moon boys basketball team is one of the top team’s in Class 5A in the WPIAL and the PIAA.

The Tigers proved that on Tuesday night, coming away with a 69-64 win against previously undefeated in section play, Chartiers Valley, on the road in Section 2-5A action.

Both team’s battled back-and-forth in the first half, with Chartiers Valley holding a slim 31-30 lead at halftime.

The Colts increased their lead to eight points in the third quarter, but the Tigers quickly stormed back to even the score, 50-50, entering the final quarter.

It was Moon’s turn to jump up by eight, only to see Chartiers Valley rally back to tie it entering the final minutes of the game.

Junior Donovan Johnson regained the lead for the Tigers for good, and the Tigers iced the game away from the free-throw line.

Johnson led the Tigers with 23 points, including 18 in the second half. Senior Connor Ryan had 15 of his 21 points in the first half. Senior point guard Jioni Smith finished with 13 points.

Chartiers Valley had four players in double figures led by junior Jared Goldstrom with 16 points. Junior Sean Banas finished with 14 points and sophomore Brayden Reynolds and senior Joe Pipilo added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

With the win, Moon improves to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the section. The Tigers will host Thomas Jefferson in a section game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Chartiers Valley drops to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the section. The Colts will travel to Central Valley in a non-section game tonight at 7:30 p.m.
